Dr. Seuss - “A Retrospective & International Touring Exhibition"

Bella Arte Gallery is excited to host The Art of Dr. Seuss – “A Retrospective and International Touring Exhibition,” celebrating the art and life of Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss). This national touring exhibition has been showcased in museums and galleries across the county with special stops at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum. The Exhibition will be leaving New York for the Richmond area in September marking the first time Virginian’s will be able to view this unique exhibit chronicling the common artistic links found throughout Dr. Seuss’s almost 70 years of creativity. Thirty-two special panels present both original and reproduced historical pieces from 1927 through 1990, along with a selection of authorized estate editions reproduced under exclusive permission from his family. Visitors to the exhibition will come away with an in-depth look at the multifaceted artistic career of America’s best known children’s book author.

The Art of Dr. Seuss National Curator, Bill Dreyer, will be present at Bella Arte Gallery for the exhibition opening on the evening of Thursday, September 13th, to provide insights into Geisel’s artistic life, his unique vision and his impact on American culture. Dreyer, a graduate of Midlothian High School and former resident of the Richmond’s Fan District, is excited to be returning to the area to showcase this very special collection from The Art of Dr. Seuss.

Exhibition Launch: Thursday, September 13th - special opening reception from 6-9pm **Exhibition will run through October 14th; Tues - Thurs. 10am to 6pm; Friday - 10am to 8pm; Saturday 10am to 6pm

The exhibition begins with early drawings in Life magazine, including editorial, advertising, military and book illustrations, as well as several works from the Secret Art collection, featuring rare and never-before-seen images from the 1920s to ’90s. Bella Arte Gallery will highlight a selection of rare artworks from The Art of Dr. Seuss collection, giving visitors an opportunity to view and acquire some of the most sought-after works over the past decade. Featured works include:

o The Economic Situation Clarified: Using his endearing Seussian birds, Ted Geisel cleverly shows us the emotional impact of the economy as it goes up and down. Seemingly inspired by the works of M.C. Escher, Economic Situation Clarified shows us that we are happy when the economy is up, and sad when it is down, exemplifying Geisel’s keen social commentary.

o Cat from the Wrong Side of the Tracks: a pseudo self-portrait of Ted Geisel who himself was a tall, cigarette smoking, mischievous prankster. The Cat in this artwork sports a humorous “nudie” cat on his tie as he stands before a surrealistic pool table. If cats have nine lives, this bad cat’s tally—as depicted in the pool score above his head—indicates he’s down to his last one.

o I Dreamed I was a Doorman at the Hotel Del Coronado: Seuss shared his hometown of San Diego with this legendary hotel and was intrigued by the charming resort located on Coronado Island. His portrayal transforms the hotel’s majestic buildings into a surreal world of Seussian architecture and eccentric color, as if inspired by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi.
