Screening and Facilitated Discussion: Until the Well Runs Dry

During the construction of the Hermes A. Kontos Building in 1994, a 19th century well filled with human remains was discovered. Through research, it was determined they were the remains of 44 adults and 12 children of primarily African descent whose corpses were used for students at the Medical College of Virginia to learn anatomy through medical dissection in the late 19th Century. Dr. Shawn Utsey, Chair of the African American Studies Department at VCU, has done extensive research on the history of the practice of using corpses of black people in the name of science at MCV and one man in particular: Chris Baker, the anatomical man for MCV. Dr. Utsey wrote and directed the documentary Until the Well Runs Dry: Medicine and Exploitation of Black Bodies that focuses on the long-standing practice at MCV, Chris Baker, and associated folklore that permeated the oral history of black Richmonders for decades. After the movie screening, Chelsea Higgs Wise, community faclitator, will navigate a discussion with Dr. Utsey that includes an opportunity for audience members to ask questions.
