      Youth Summer Drawing Program

Spend your Summer at the Art Factory! We are excited to offer a NEW four week long program for kids ages 7-13 years old who are interested in learning about drawing!  We will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6-7:30pm starting on July 9th and ending on July 30th. Throughout the month we will explore various drawing techniques, materials, and influential artists including Albrecht Durer, Aron Wiesenfeld, John Kenn Mortensen, and Zoe Tilley. Each week we will focus on a new drawing technique such as contour lines, perspective, shading, and more. We will be working towards completing a final project featuring a special object of their choice.  Parents are invited to join us for a gallery showing on the final day to see what we have been working on! All materials for this program will be provided by Art Factory except for the object your child chooses to draw for their final project.  On the first day of class, please bring 2-3 3D objects that have sentimental value to the child and that they find visually interesting since we will be drawing this object over the course of the program.  Students are encouraged to bring in any previous works they have created for our instructor to assess their individual skill levels.  Each participant will receive a sketchbook, graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, charcoal sticks, pencil sharpeners, a kneaded eraser, various sheets of drawing paper, and anything else they may need during class on the first day. Our instructor will also give out short assignments to be completed at home in between class dates to practice newly learned techniques and to apply their new skills to their independent drawings. Class Outline: Week 1: July 9th, 2019Contour Lines - We will learn how to draw blind contours, learn about finding the line of action in their item, and finding the planes of a 3D object and breaking it down into shapes. Week 2: July 16th, 2019Perspective - We will learn about perspective, how it can tell a story by what we focus on and also how composition and proportions help in the same way. We will have them draw and discover which side or perspective they want to draw their 3D object for their final drawing. Week 3: July 23rd, 2019Shading - We will focus on recognizing light sources and shading to create shadows to give our objects a more 3D appearance.  We will have them create a four scale gradient with graphite so their drawings will have a dark tone, midtone, and highlight. Week 4: July 30th, 2019Final Drawing - In this week we will help anyone who needs adjustments or aid in their final drawings. We will use a variety of graphite pencils 2H-2B to achieve different shades in their finished drawings.  Parents are invited to arrive prior to the end of class for our gallery. There will be time for a snack break during class, so please pack a lite snack and water bottle each day.
